Poultry red mite
Why you must control poultry red mite promptly
Red mite causes:
- Lowered resistance
- Greater risk of transmitting diseases
- Economic losses
- Bird mite
The poultry red mite is a parasite which lives among birds, including hens, and regularly visits these animals to feed off their blood.
A population of poultry red mites consists of five stages. The development of the egg into an adult poultry red mite takes seven to nine days; the egg develops into a six-legged larva in two to three days. This six-legged larva transforms into an eight-legged protonymph in one to two days. The protonymph is the first stage to visit the hen to feed off its blood, which it requires to develop into a deutonymph in one to two days. The deutonymph also needs blood and will then develop into an adult poultry red mite in one to two days. Both male and female adult poultry red mites regularly feed off the blood of their host.
Poultry red mites cause stress and tension in flocks of hens. This is because in particular the poultry red mite visits the hens at night to feed off their blood. When there is a high infestation rate of poultry red mites they can ingest so much blood from the hens that this will cause anaemia. Furthermore, the poultry red mites may carry pathogens and transmit these from one hen to another. Well-known pathogens that are isolated from the poultry red mite include the NCD virus, the erysipelas bacterium and Salmonella Gallinarum.
Apart from the fact that the poultry red mite causes the above-mentioned problems, the blood that has been taken from the host has to be built up again. The hen gets the nutrients for this from its food. A high concentration of poultry red mites will thus cause not only stress and tension in the flock, but the hens will also need more feed to replenish these deficiencies. The harm that poultry red mites cause can be summed up as follows: higher feed costs and poorer technical results.
Herba Mite is a supplementary animal feed for poultry. It is composed of concentrated extracts from aromatic plants. These extracts produce a natural odour barrier against red mite, which disrupts the mite’s reproductive cycle.
Supplementary animal feed for poultry
Herba Mite is a supplementary animal feed for poultry. It is composed of concentrated extracts from aromatic plants. These extracts produce a natural odour barrier against red mite, which disrupts the mite’s reproductive cycle. Research also shows that Herba Mite exerts a positive effect on feed conversion. Herba Mite is a powerful product, which is completely non-toxic.
